The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a policy and action research organisation. We promote sustainable development to improve livelihoods and protect the environments on which these livelihoods are built. We specialise in linking local priorities to global challenges. IIED is based in London and works in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and the Pacific, with some of the world’s most vulnerable people. We work with them to strengthen their voice in the decision-making arenas that affect them — from village councils to international conventions.

The Forest Team at IIED is looking for fixed-term, part-time (2 days per week) Coordinator to oversee the team’s portfolio of research communications, events, administration and provide occasional financial support to the Senior Coordinator as required.

The Forest Team works with partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America to improve the livelihoods of those who live in and around forests, as well as ensuring that those forests are managed in a fair and sustainable way. Local communities, indigenous peoples and family smallholders are central to the work of the Forest Team, which normally engages with such groups through in-country partners (who comprise civil society organisations, academia, governments and private sector organisations) who together develop participatory work to achieve change. Methods used include innovative and participatory action-research to generate, validate and wield new evidence, support to mobilise in-country, regional and international partnerships, the development of tools, learning groups and events to build consensus and capability, the development of advocacy approaches and tactics and coalitions to implement them, and engagement of marginalised groups to shape in-country processes, change discourses and decision-making.

To succeed in this role, you must have a minimum of three years’ experience in a similar support or coordination role, the ability to manage a busy workload independently and strong written and oral communications skills including the ability to synthesis complex information.

You will also need excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office software, experience managing events and meetings; and some experience of financial administration. You will be able to multi-task, have lots of initiative and flexibility, great attention to detail, and enjoy working with a team and with little supervision.

You will be experienced in working with a diverse range of actors from different backgrounds and cultures – including international institutes, policy makers and civil society organisations. An interest in the topic of natural resources, specifically forestry, and international development is desirable. This is a great opportunity for someone that has initiative, strong organisational skills and the ability to remain flexible and responsive.
