Beer is a critical to Diageo’s overall performance and a vital part of our growth ambition. Our global beer business (~£2bn NSV) includes one of the world’s leading brands, Guinness, operates a network of breweries across Europe & Africa, a strong footprint across North America and strategic partnerships to produce and distribute our brands across every content. Our ambition is to be the best performing, innovative and exciting beer company in the world and consistently see our beer portfolio providing accretive growth to Diageo. To help deliver this ambition a President for Beer has been appointed on our Global Exec team to create the strategic vision and direction through the full value chain on Beer. The purpose of the Strategy Manager – Global Beer is to partner with the President to develop and embed a winning strategy to deliver this ambition.  This role will be instrumental in setting the strategic direction, goals and resources for our global beer business

This role will require effective collaboration with cross function leaders and experts including managing directors of key beer markets, our global brand marketing teams, supply chain leaders and group strategy. The role will report directly to the President for Beer and sit within the global strategy team to provide it with the functional support and resources required to be successful.

It requires the confidence to bring constructive challenge to the top management and deliver outcomes whilst building alignment and understanding of the strategy across the senior leadership team.  It can confidently prepare the materials to lead effective debate which result in value creating outcomes.

The role will not have any direct reports and can be based in London or Dublin.

What you will be responsible for

  • Global Strategy:  Partnering with the President for Beer to set the strategic direction, goals, resources and approach to achieve our goal of winning in beer
  • Strategic planning: Work closely with Group Strategy, GBT, Supply and key markets to ensure their Long & Short term strategic plans and resource allocation are aligned to the Global beer strategy
  • External radar: Constantly assess the global beer landscape to identify opportunities and threats to our current strategy and execution
  • Decision Making: In partnership with key stakeholders across the group, model and refine strategic investment opportunities and drive decision making
  • Performance: monitor and assess beer performance trajectory against the ambition, highlighting areas for intervention

Qualifications and Experience

The qualifications and experience you will bring:

  • From leading university
  • Preferably MBA skills / knowledge
  • Alcbev industry experience beneficial
  • Emerging market experience / background an advantage
  • Experience in a strategic consultancy beneficial

The skills you will need: 

  • Ability to bring challenge and alternative view points to the Top Management
  • Ability to understand the practical environment in which a strategy needs to be delivered, and build fit for purpose solutions
  • Outstanding commercial analytical skills, with good experience researching, analysing and interpreting data from multiple disparate sources of varying size and complexity
  • Good experience in communicating (written and verbal) to demanding senior audiences
  • High organisational agility to navigate a complex, networked organisation
  • Demonstrate strong relationship building and stakeholder management experience
  • Thrives in ambiguous and challenging environment
  • Ability to lead a project from defining the strategic outcomes required to embedding it across the senior leadership population, i.e., not only the content but also the stakeholder ownership
