At GSK we are seeking a highly capable person to join our Supply Chain and Strategy function to provide Business Development expertise relating to Divestments, Acquisitions and/or Large-Scale Strategic Partnerships impacting our Pharma Supply Chain. This includes partnering with our Commercial and R&D business development teams on Commercial and Clinical stage acquisitions, divestments and licensing.

GSK is currently undergoing a significant transformational journey. It is in the process of separating its Consumer Healthcare business from is Prescription-medicines and Vaccines businesses (globally).

Over the last 3 years the Business Development team has been instrumental in delivering complex multi-million £ Divestments, Acquisitions and Strategic-Partnerships delivering significant financial and strategic benefit to the Pharma Supply Chain and GSK.

The Business Development Lead is a senior role (Director Level) which interacts with a wide range of senior stakeholders throughout the global Pharmaceutical Supply Chain (PSC), but also with R&D Business Development, Global Corporate Development and Pharma commercial teams. The position acts as a single point of contact and accountability for leading a cross-functional matrix team to deliver successful Divestments, Mergers, Acquisitions and Licensing activities. Key elements of the role include ensuring full sign-off of identified (and thoroughly vetted) opportunities within PSC (including engaging all relevant stakeholders and parties to ensure the organization is properly aligned) and implementation and programme management (post execution for transfer or launch). The position also acts as single point of contact for all supply chain BD activities for the internal and external stakeholders (including buyers, sellers, external legal counsel, advisors and investment banks).

Please Note: The BD Lead does not have any direct reports, but instead has significant cross-functional reporting lines to manage. Effective delivery in the role is heavily reliant upon others and requires continuous assessment (in collaboration with a wide-variety of delivery teams) to address the complexities of implementing and managing change in multi-cultural and cross-functional environments (globally).

About You:

This role has particular emphasis/focus on influencing and building strong relationships with senior stakeholders (internal and external to GSK) to interface, build trust and drive a sense of urgency. Experience in leading projects through influence (with the ability to clearly demonstrate the benefits for those involved) is required. It is imperative in this role that you drive common-objective thinking, with a complete focus on delivering/providing solutions. You will have gravitas, be very persuasive, and have proven experience of dealing with diverse stakeholder groups (at senior VP-level) to deliver results.

Business development experience in supply chain, commercial, R&D or related functions in the Biopharma industry is preferable. However, we are open to considering other industries in which you have obtained your experience, assuming demonstrable strong negotiation-led business development skills/experience. Understanding and ability to successfully navigate the complexities associated with multi-million-dollar acquisitions, divestments, and licensing-agreements is key to delivery in this role.

Location / Travel: We are open-minded as to your location (within the UK, Europe or the USA) but please note that there is circa 25% travel required in this role when travel restrictions due to COVID are lifted (as per business-needs).

Basic Qualifications:

  • Strong Strategic Leadership ability (obtained in complex matrix-management environments with internal and external stakeholders)
  • Degree Qualification (in suitable discipline), MBA (preferable)
