Within the Biopharm Discovery Unit, the Antibody Selections group is looking for an experienced Antibody Engineer. You will use your expertise in antibody engineering to develop and employ library-based approaches using yeast and phage display systems to discover therapeutic antibodies with optimal biological and biophysical properties. You will work closely with structural and computational groups, incorporating next generation sequencing and insilico methods to enable more intelligent and focussed antibody library design. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead efforts as a subject matter expert in Antibody Engineering and Lead Optimisation.

Biopharm Discovery is a department dedicated to the discovery of novel and effective biopharmaceutical medicines. This department comprises several complementary functions focused on the progression of a portfolio of biopharmaceuticals from initial antibody discovery, expression and characterisation to molecular engineering and biological and physiochemical profiling.

Within the Biopharm Discovery Unit, the Antibody Selections group has responsibility for identifying and optimizing high quality hits and leads from in vitro libraries and in vivo technologies. The team uses the Adimab yeast platform along with in vivo transgenic mouse technologies to generate diverse panels of hits and leads which are expressed and triaged using a variety of characterisation assays. The Antibody Selections group also works with external groups to deliver monoclonal antibody reagents for therapeutic applications. In addition, the Antibody Selections group has accountability for developing and accessing new antibody discovery technologies to enable increasingly diverse hit panels and generation of candidates against challenging targets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Use scientific expertise to solve project challenges using invitro yeast-based library technologies.
  • Work closely with colleagues in computational and structural sciences to integrate structure-based library approaches and insilico design.
  • Work closely with colleagues in physiochemical profiling teams to incorporate developability knowledge early in the discovery process.
  • Scientific leadership and impact through a lab-based role.
  • Accountable for delivery of high-quality hits and leads to program teams using our in vitro and in vivo Ab discovery platforms.
  • Maintaining high quality and accurate records of data in GSK databases and electronic lab notebooks.
  • Clear and concise presentations of results to peers and project teams.
  • Influence new scientific direction and execution of projects and discovery platforms outside of immediate area of expertise through analysis of feasibility and strategic fit.
  • Authoring of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals.

  • PhD in biological sciences or equivalent with extensive experience in Antibody Engineering and Antibody Discovery processes. 
  • Demonstrated strong scientific experience in antibody selections techniques; such as phage and/or yeast display, or library selection/screening-based protein engineering techniques.

  • Track record of critiquing scientific data with the ability to identify and resolve scientific questions
  • Scientific leadership skills with experience of authoring publications in peer reviewed journals.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams and will display excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
