About the job

It is a very exciting time to join HM Land Registry (HMLR) as we accelerate our major digital transformation programme. Our existing software systems form part of the critical national infrastructure, safeguarding land and property ownership valued at £7 trillion, enabling over £1 trillion worth of personal and commercial lending to be secured against property across England and Wales.

We are currently consolidating our Data Science activity into a formal Practice. By joining us, you will become a founding member of our Data Science Practice, part of our award-winning Digital, Data and Technology Directorate which is at the heart of the move to a digital, data-driven organisation. Our ambitions are to provide our users with cutting-edge digital services and data products.

You will help enable this ambition by providing thought leadership to develop our Practice, and the practical skills, expertise and experience in Data Science to help us apply new tools, technologies and methodologies for Machine Learning and data exploration.

Job description

What will our Data Scientists be doing?

You will help build our specialist capability to extract insight from a wide variety of datasets and enhance our ability to innovate, in response to user needs, as we develop data driven services and value-added data products.

You will have opportunities to work on a diverse range of programmes and projects across our Transformation Portfolio. You will use your leadership experience to build specialist technical teams, and your curiosity, technical ability and problem solving skillsets to support and enable our Delivery teams, and other Subject Matter Experts, to solve problems across the organisation using tools, techniques and approaches from Data Science.

As a member of the Data Science Practice you might be involved in hyper automation of our existing systems using Deep Learning techniques to identify and extract information from digital imagery; enhancing and developing our Registers by interrogating and mining our free text data stores using Natural Language Processing; improving user journeys though our services by building recommender systems; developing intelligent tools to identify and counter fraudulent Property transactions; helping to understand our customers; or increasing value for our users, and the wider market sector, by conceptualising and building innovative new data services, products and tools.

We provide opportunities to collaborate across Government, industry and academia to boost our Research, Development and Innovation work. We actively encourage exploration into new opportunities, approaches and tools that will bring measurable benefit and value to our organisation. We also embrace Continuous Professional Development and knowledge sharing, satisfying your desire to learn and stay at the cutting edge, whilst building the capability of our teams to deliver value.

If you can demonstrate expert level skills, knowledge, practical experience and leadership in one or more of the functional Data Science domains and subject specialisms we’re recruiting into, we’d welcome your application for one of our position as Lead Data Scientist.
