Internal Communications Manager (12 month FTC), Open to flexibility

At KPMG, our values define who we are and the way we do business. As a leading professional services firm, we know that our strength and capability come from our people – their different perspectives, experiences and backgrounds. From our inclusive leadership strategy to our diversity and inclusion targets – we’re making bold changes to who we are and what we do. Be part of it.

This role is a 12 month Secondment / Fixed Term Contract Opportunity.

Purpose

This role sits within the Internal Communications (IC) team, part of the Corporate Communications department. The IC team supports the business in two ways: through multi-channel editorial, publishing and production; and by business partnering to provide communications support to priority strategic and operational projects.

This is a varied role demanding a flexible and adaptable approach. It would be preferable if the successful candidate had experience of internal and change communication to drive employee engagement. They will combine the ability to give sound strategic communication advice to internal clients with the knowledge and enthusiasm for delivering.

The Role

This role will require the individual to work with senior members of the UK leadership team including the Executive Committee (ExCo) and Partners to deliver firm-wide and localised communication and engagement initiatives, which are aligned to the vision and business strategy.

As a member of the IC team this person is a key part of the content engine for all online and offline channels including the weekly news channel (Newsroom), quarterly updates and other regular communication and engagement activities originating from the leadership and central teams.

While the role reports directly to the Head of Internal Communications, it is critical to maintain strong links with key leadership across the business.

Responsibilities

  • Develop internal communications strategies and plans to support different functions of the business. Key audiences include partners, People Leaders and colleagues.
  • Be accountable for the successful implementation and roll-out of these plans, including messaging, drafting and designing communications, identifying audiences and effective use of channels including internal social and other online channels.
  • Design and put in place an effective communications infrastructure of channels and tools that enables ongoing BAU communications.
  • Introduce innovative and creative approaches.
  • Educate and influence senior stakeholders (often at an ExCo level) about best practice change communication approaches, as well as what great operational communication looks like (to cover people-related policy and practice, results and performance communication, engagement on business strategy etc).
  • Work closely with PR team on any reputational and crisis communication activity to help drive our people before press approach.

The Person

The role requires a self-motivated individual who is not only strategic, but has a strong track record in delivering BAU and change communications in a programme environment.

Demonstrable in depth experience of working in communications – in-house, on a consultancy basis, or in an agency - is essential along with experience dealing with complex, sensitive and challenging projects. Membership of professional body and/or relevant qualifications would be an advantage.

Skills required

  • Ability to combine strategic thinking with a demonstrable track record in successful implementation
  • Strong influencing skills and stakeholder management. Able to cultivate and maintain good working relationships and manage demanding and challenging clients. Also able to provide critical feedback and handle sensitive issues when needed. Has the gravitas and experience to give credible advice and inspire confidence at all levels and can provide compelling and well thought out solutions to complex problems.
  • Excellent writing, editorial and presentation skills. Able to identify, craft and deliver key messages, narratives and information in succinct and engaging ways
  • Strong technical knowledge of key communication channels and content including intranet, print, film, digital and social media. Experienced in commissioning branding and design and interested in the impact technology is having on communication and collaboration.
  • Very strong project management skills, with the ability to self-manage, prioritising a wide number and variety of tasks to deliver overall objectives.
  • A good understanding of and interest in technology, social media and the impact developing technology is having on communications and collaboration.
  • The ability to understand how internal communication project activities need to integrate with all other communication and corporate activities.
  • The ability to influence stakeholders about the value of good internal communication and act as an ambassador for Internal Communications / Corporate Affairs.
  • A team player with a collaborative approach.
  • The ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • A sound understanding of KPMG’s business and wider industry issues, or the ability to rapidly acquire it - experience of professional services would be an asset.
