The Infrastructure team is hiring a GIS (Geographical Information Systems) Officer to work on the Infrastructure Mapping Application (IMA)

The Infrastructure team’s role is to lead and work between those who shape London’s infrastructure, developing solutions to cross- cutting issues, embedding collaborative working practices and aligning work towards the Mayor’s priorities. To do this we work at all stages of infrastructure regulation, planning, funding, financing, design, construction, maintenance and improvement. The Infrastructure team is supported by a Data & Innovation sub-team, where the GIS Officer (this role) sits. The Data & Innovation team develops and manages two innovative digital tools underpinning the wider Infrastructure Coordination Service (ICS) —including the London Infrastructure Mapping Application (IMA) and London’s Underground Asset Register (LUAR).  

The Infrastructure Mapping Application was developed to provide insight and increase certainty regarding London’s future growth, helping co-ordinate construction projects and minimise disruption. Over the past few years we have focussed on data sourcing, and it now has a wealth of data relating to future infrastructure investment data, growth & development data and contextual data. The IMA forms the basis for new ways of working, supporting joint streetworks and proactive ‘planning for growth’; the GLA leads the country in this space.

The GIS Officer would support the team in data processing and transformation so that data from a diverse range of partners can be standardised and mapped to the IMA. The GIS Officer would also be involved in any IMA development, supporting with User Acceptance Testing and resolving data-related and technical queries that arise with the online map. They would be expected to maintain a significant (and growing) volume of data. Influxes of new data are varied; the GIS Officer would be expected to respond rapidly to new data, data sources and load these into the tool so they can be used by the wider ICS.

The IMA team works closely with the wider Infrastructure team as the data in the tool drives much of the delivery work. It is a role where data leads to implementation and better outcomes in London,

This is a great opportunity to develop your skills and experience, but you will need to bring with you a strong technical background including detailed knowledge of Geographic Information Systems in practical use and evidence of commitment to keep abreast of new development. You will also need to be able to think creatively about how your team’s products and services will fit into emerging agendas like big data and smart cities.

This role requires a strong technical background, with practical experience in GIS tools, ideally ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online. Experience in the use of databases, data processing tools (e.g. FME) and codebases e.g.R/Python would be advantageous. Experience in infrastructure/utilities sector a bonus, but not essential.
