The Ri and Masterclasses

The Royal Institution’s (Ri) purpose is to harness science for the maximum benefit of society. But to achieve the full benefits of what science has to offer, we must ensure there is a healthy and dynamic interaction between science, culture and society. Home to eminent scientists such as Michael Faraday, Humphry Davy and Kathleen Lonsdale, the Ri’s discoveries have helped to shape the modern world. Just as importantly these scientists recognised the importance of sharing their work with the wider public.

Today we continue our mission as a registered charity providing science education and heritage activities for people of all ages and backgrounds across the UK and around the world. These activities include the world-famous CHRISTMAS LECTURES; public talks from the world’s greatest thinkers in our historic lecture theatre; a national programme of Masterclasses for young people in mathematics, engineering and computer science; hands-on science workshops in our L’Oréal Young Scientist Centre; animations and films from our award-winning Ri Channel and the preservation of our scientific legacy through the Faraday Museum and archival collections.

The Ri Masterclass programme was originally started in 1978 and we now engage with over 7,000 primary and secondary school students each year in more than 140 locations across the country, stretching all the way from Aberdeen to Jersey.

The aim of Ri Masterclasses is to open the eyes of children and young people to the excitement, beauty and value of mathematics, engineering and computer science, highlighting the wide range of exciting careers to which these subjects can lead. Ri Masterclasses are hands-on sessions lead by expert volunteer presenters from industry and academia. They challenge and guide engaged young people to think creatively and to use the principles of these subjects to solve real-life problems.

The programme has fixed-term funding to support expansion of its activities so this fixed-term administrative post has been created to support the programme coordinators and allow them to achieve the targets.

About you

As a member of the Ri Masterclass team the Programme Administrator has two particular responsibilities:

  1. Provision of administrative support to the Primary Masterclass Coordinator to ensure smooth running of the routine Primary Masterclass activities. To include routine communications and management of logistical aspects.
  2. Support the administration of all aspects of the Secondary and Primary Masterclasses in the Greater London area at times of high workload. They will use Salesforce and Eventbrite to perform student recruitment and will liaise with schools, venues, speakers, and supervisors for the provision of all logistical elements needed for successful running of Masterclasses.

They will also provide additional ad-hoc administrative support to the wider Masterclass programme for Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science.
