Our client is one of the world’s largest banks that employs people in most countries around the world. We have been asked to help them find a Senior Internal Communications Manager to support international HR campaigns. The role is based in London and you must have at least 5 years’ experience of internal communications. 

The role is primarily focused on Communications to employees, although there is also a requirement to share content with externally-facing communications teams. This is a senior role and requires excellent stakeholder management skills and an understanding of what it is like to work in a matrixed organisation to support campaign activation outside the UK.

Key to this role will be:

  • Development and implementation of strategic communications activities and campaigns for HR globally – HR to HR and HR to the wider business
  • Ensuring that people messages and strategic themes are clear, appropriately connected and prioritised
  • Providing strategic and creative counsel to senior stakeholders in HR
  • Working with HR teams, and where appropriate the Employee Insight team in Global Communications, to ensure that the impact of communications can be evidenced
  • Working closely with specialist teams in Global Communications to ensure effective input to and delivery of HR communications and campaigns across the bank
  • Providing employee communications support and guidance to regional/country communicators as required
  • Support the delivery of people related change for HR and the bank.

Responsibilities, key audiences and stakeholders

  • Develop and drive employee communications activities and campaigns that support business objectives and key people themes, including Diversity and Inclusion, leadership, performance management, learning and talent
  • Create compelling content to engage employees around the people agenda, aligned to our purpose, strategy and values
  • Provide timely advice, insight and measurement to senior stakeholders to demonstrate effectiveness of communication activities
  • Work with others in Global Communications to effectively create and deliver people related content and campaigns
  • Source and provide relevant stories to feed global channels and campaigns
  • Arm people managers with briefings and materials that inform and mobilise employees
  • Consider the external implications of implementing employee communications campaigns and projects and collaborate with media colleagues on external messages to mitigate risks
  • Mobilise employees in HR and across the bank by delivering key messages through appropriate programmes and channels
  • Provide insight and counsel to HR leaders on employee communications
  • Work collaboratively with communications colleagues across businesses, functions and regions to ensure plans and messaging are aligned with central, global strategies.

Knowledge & experience

An experienced communications professional possessing the following:

  • Proven track record in developing, managing and implementing effective communication strategie
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, including the ability to work confidently and effectively with senior leaders across global/regional geographies
  • Ability to understand business issues and devise communication solutions that deliver results, constructing fresh approaches where appropriate and making connections to other issues
  • Able to work in an ambiguous changing environment, prioritise and reconcile competing demands and resolve complex issues
  • A strong team player who can work collaboratively with peers and manage and deliver excellent performance from teams and individuals
  • Excellent interpersonal, strategic planning and project management skills
  • Cultural appreciation of the needs of different audiences in different markets
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong knowledge of communication trends and best practice
  • Provide advice and guidelines to regional/country employee communicators to ensure communications are aligned
  • Monitor the overall quality of employee communications delivery
  • Develop strong relationships with key champions, advocates and colleagues to facilitate execution of communications plans
  • Ensure execution to world-class standards and share knowledge and best practice across the communications network
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest employee communications research, techniques and approach, and network with peers.

  • The role holder needs to exercise considerable judgment to ensure that messages are clear and that employees are not overloaded. This involves highly developed influencing skills, as well as strong audience understanding
  • The role requires a strong partnership with key stakeholders within HR, as such the role holder needs to have confidence and credibility to constructively challenge senior leaders on issues and proposals and advocate alternative actions
  • The role is responsible for creating content across a variety of channels and formats so in-depth knowledge about the strengths and weaknesses of each medium is required.

  • The role holder reports to the Head of Communications for HR, with key responsibility of developing, planning and executing communications for HR and across the bank
  • This role has wide scope and contains a strong component of independent action and initiative development, whilst aligning to the global framework and escalating when requires
  • This role requires working closely with team members and other communications colleagues to provide integrated campaigns that are compelling and have consistent messaging
  • The role operates across a complex and matrix structure, with diverse cultures
  • The role often operates under pressure when dealing with potentially complex situations.
