Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy supply.

What we do matters: making a difference to people’s lives now, and for generations to come. We offer a diverse range of flexible working career opportunities: roles that are stimulating and rewarding. And it’s important to us that we recruit from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds – bringing different perspectives and experiences to our work.

This is a great opportunity to play a key role in protecting the interests of energy consumers and to work on some of the highest profile issues within the energy retail sector, such as: quality of customer service, switching suppliers, marketing and consumer redress. You will make sure that domestic and non-domestic retail energy suppliers to are treating their customers fairly, including vulnerable domestic customers. You’ll lead investigations into reported instances of non-compliance with regulations – gathering evidence and assessing data to form a full picture of scenarios and making recommendations on next steps – but will also promote and highlight positive instances of good customer care. You’ll build positive relationships with energy suppliers that enable you to quickly influence behaviour and practice and to ensure that consumer interests are central to their practice. With your unique perspective in the energy marketplace, you’ll also be able to identify trends and issues where wider interventions are required in conjunction with other Ofgem teams.

We expect that you’ll already have experience of compliance or enforcement work, which could take place in any regulated sector. It’s important that you have excellent communication skills that enable you to build positive relationships with stakeholders at all levels, and work well across teams. Good organisational abilities are essential: you’ll be able to prioritise and plan your workload according to deadlines and have a good awareness of how your work supports and connects with other projects and initiatives. With a keen eye for detail, you’ll also offer proven evaluation skills that enable you to quickly understand and explain an issue and make recommendations appropriate actions.
