Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy supply.

What we do matters: making a difference to people’s lives now, and for generations to come. We offer a diverse range of flexible working career opportunities: roles that are stimulating and rewarding. And it’s important to us that we recruit from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds – bringing different perspectives and experiences to our work.

This is a chance to be part of our Energy Systems Management and Security (ESMS) division, which works across a wide spectrum of the energy system, including issues such as decarbonisation, network charging, monopoly regulation, and security of supply. This is a new role within our Gas team and it presents the opportunity to contribute to reshaping the UK energy market as we work towards net zero targets. You’ll be involved in the latest initiatives such as ensuring the wholesale market works effectively, and considering how to best deploy the use of hydrogen gas in our energy system in pursuit of a cleaner and more efficient gas market that meets consumer needs and environmental goals. It’s a role where you’ll be asked engage with a wide range of stakeholders, and to work on some complex, far-reaching policy issues and resolution – presenting evidence-based recommendations on policy to senior decision-makers. You can expect plenty of autonomy, so it’s a role that will suit someone who enjoys taking the initiative.

It’s an opportunity that will suit someone with previous policy experience, which could take place in a number of settings: government or civil service; another regulated sector; or of course elsewhere in the energy sector. You’ll need to have good experience of project delivery and management: working collaboratively to meet agreed outcomes. Highly developed communication skills (in writing and in person) and the ability to develop co-operative relationships with different stakeholders will be key.
