Senior Manager, Wholesale Markets, Open to flexible working
Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy supply.
What we do matters: making a difference to people’s lives now, and for generations to come. We offer a diverse range of flexible working career opportunities: roles that are stimulating and rewarding. And it’s important to us that we recruit from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds – bringing different perspectives and experiences to our work.
This post sits within our GB Wholesale Markets teams, which works to ensure the GB electricity markets enable economy-wide decarbonisation while maintaining security of supply and delivering consumer value. The focus of this role will be the GB Capacity Market, which aims to ensure security of electricity supply as we decarbonise.
Our electricity supply will need to undergo further rapid transformation to meet the UK Government’s latest target of a 78% reduction in emissions by 2035. The Capacity Market is a crucial mechanism for ensuring we have sufficient electricity to meet growing demand as we decarbonise heat and transport. It plays a key role in encouraging investment in energy infrastructure and, increasingly, low carbon technologies.
You’ll play a leading role in Ofgem’s ten-year review of the Capacity Market, ensuring it remains fit for purpose as we make further progress towards the net zero targets. You’ll help to ensure that Ofgem fulfils its obligations as a key delivery partner for the Capacity Market and you can expect considerable stakeholder engagement and collaboration - working across Ofgem, the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the National Grid System Operator (NGESO) and industry.
We expect that you’ll already have extensive experience of working in a policy or regulatory environment with proven ability to identify risks, suggest mitigations and influence decisions. You’ll have a track record of effective project management, working independently to meet challenging deadlines. It’s important that you have highly developed communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills that equip you to represent Ofgem effectively to senior stakeholders, sometimes on contentious issues. Excellent analytical skills will mean that you are comfortable working with quantitative and qualitative data to inform decisions and recommendations on complex subject matter. And it’s likely that you are degree qualified in a relevant subject, such as economics or engineering, or that you have gained in depth sector knowledge of at least one of the wholesale power or gas energy markets, particularly GB and/or European markets.
