Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy supply. We are playing a vital part in accelerating the transition to Net Zero and a carbon neutral energy system - a goal that everyone wants to achieve. Whatever your role, you’ll be playing your part in creating new energy solutions that are great for customers, and great for the environment.

We offer a diverse range of flexible working career opportunities: roles that are stimulating and rewarding, where you can get involved in ground-breaking work. And it’s important to us that we recruit from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds – bringing different perspectives and experiences to our work.

A student placement at Ofgem is a fantastic opportunity to develop your hands-on experience of software development in a highly professional setting - working on a wide range of code used to design, build and support a variety of web-based applications. You’ll help to develop and maintain bespoke digital web applications and services that support Ofgem in its work. You’ll offer support to colleagues who encounter technical issues, by completing a variety of template SQL scripts, testing your solution has worked, and then arrange for its deployment to live. It’s a great opportunity to be involved in both the maintenance of legacy applications and the design and development of new cloud based solutions.

You will currently be studying in a relevant subject area such as: Computer Science, Computer Technology, Software Development, Computer Science, Web portal development or other related subjects. You’ll need a good knowledge of SQL Server development; Microsoft .NET (C#); ASP.Net MVC; as well as debugging skills. It’s essential that you have excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical audiences. As well as being an effective and committed team player, it’s also important that you are well organised and can plan and prioritise different tasks effectively – often with competing deadlines.

Expect a role where two days are seldom the same. It’s an opportunity to get involved in work that makes a real difference, supporting better outcomes for energy consumers and helping to shape a greener energy sector for the future. It’s a fantastic launch pad for your career.

Ofgem is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We embrace diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All employment is decided on the basis of open and fair competition, merit and business need.
