Pipeline Project and Resource Management (PPRM) mission is to apply our Professional Project/Program management discipline and drug/vaccine development expertise to build and deliver robust and competitive plans that ensure optimal delivery of medicines/vaccines to patients.

Development Pipeline Project Managers (PPMs) comprise a community of drug development experts applying professional Project/Program management discipline and principles to translate the medicine strategy into global development plans, inspire smart decisions and promote flawless Project/Program execution. Pipeline Project Managers provide robust, contextual Project/Program and scenario planning by applying business acumen, sound judgement, objective challenge and clarity of vision. They monitor and influence team performance and plan execution by driving effective teamwork, issues-risks management and timely decision-making. PPMs provide operational leadership to the Medicine Development Team or Early Development Team.

In this position, the Director, Pipeline Project Management will report to the Head PPM Development (SPC) and will lead a team of 5-10 Project/Program managers, primarily based in UK, US, EU with linkages to the whole R&D global footprint. You will be accountable for ensuring that the relevant drugs development knowledge and Project/Program Management expertise is collectively applied within your group. As a leader you will also have visible accountabilities for working with each Project/Program Manager in your group to ensure that a collection of quality robust integrated detailed plans, scenario planning, budget forecasting / management, risk identification / management, and greater understanding of the variability of assumptions supporting these plans to ensure delivery to plan for their projects. You will also be accountable for the global practice of Project Management across GSK R&D and within your business or therapeutic/disease area. You will be accountable to monitor and look to incorporate global industry best practices to ensure that the Project Management capabilities and competencies are industry leading.

The role is also a Project/Program Manager for Projects/Programs within the R&D pipeline (the type of Project/Program will be considered alongside workload). You will work closely with key stakeholders (e.g. R&D Finance, R&D Strategy & Portfolio, Commercial teams, business or therapeutic/disease area, etc.) to drive consistent, integrated and strategic Project/Program Management across R&D (and beyond for Programs) to ensure Projects/Programs are delivered on time, on budget and to the Target Medicines/Vaccines Profile.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supervise a team of Project/Program managers to ensure the application of drugs/vaccines development and Project/Program management expertise is applied across their respective portfolio.
  • Act as the Project/Program manager (Chief Operating Officer) on one or more Project/Program in order to build a quality and robust integrated detailed plan and greater understanding of the variability of assumptions supporting this plan to enable the Project/Program to deliver on time, to budget and to Target Medicines/Vaccines Profile or expected Program benefits
  • Accountable to allocate Project/Program managers resources in alignment with business priorities.
  • Use breadth of knowledge, exhibit In-depth understanding of several of the phases across the end-to-end R&D/stage-gate process from discovery through preclinical testing, early/late clinical development into manufacturing and launch/post launch. Experience of working across many of the phases.
  • Develop and implement strategies to establish and maintain a Project/Program plan and management capability (tools, processes, ways of working, people) to enable GSK R&D to effectively and productively deliver differentiated medicines/vaccines of value through the GSK R&D pipeline.
  • Look for ways to increase the competency level of Project/Program management across GSK.
  • Maintain awareness of business or therapeutic/disease area trends within your collective pipeline to ensure plans are fit for purpose.
  • Provide operational input and review to ensure resource allocation is in alignment with Project/Program and allocated pipeline workload forecasts across the R&D portfolio.
  • Review Project/Programs assigned to your group to ensure alignment with strategy (Project/Program and portfolio) and optimize delivery and enable best practice sharing and use in Project/Program management, capabilities, tools, and processes. This would also include due diligence for future BD opportunities.
  • Act as a point of contact for business or therapeutic/disease area and business partners (e.g., Finance, Portfolio) to drive consistent, integrated, strategic Project/Program management by the application of Project/Program management and Therapeutic Area expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in scientific or business discipline together with substantial industry experience within their given business or therapeutic/disease area including all of the disciplines listed above
  • Pharmaceutical drug/vaccine development certification. Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate a plus
  • Track record of project delivery. Areas of key importance are Drug/Vaccine Development, Line and Matrix Management, Project/Program Management, Portfolio Management, Therapeutic Area Expertise, Performance Management, Risk Management, Financial Management, Strategy Development and People Management / Development. 
  • Agile and distributed decision-making - using evidence and applying judgement to balance pace, rigour and risk
  • Experience of leading in a global project management function where people are challenged, developed and talent management, is a plus.
