Deputy Director (Finance and Operations), part time 28 hours per week
Background and summary of the job
The Minster Centre is a registered charity based in Queens Park, NW6 providing psychotherapy and counselling training and a therapy service. Its courses are accredited/validated by UKCP, BACP and Middlesex University and the Centre is registered with the Office for Students (OfS). The therapy service provides long term therapy (both online and in person) delivered by senior trainees. The Centre has more than 300 students and 60 plus staff including around 50 trainers.
The Centre is led by a Senior management team (SMT) of a Director and currently two part-time Deputy Directors who oversee training and the clinical services. One Deputy Director is retiring this summer and we are seeking to recruit to that post.
In addition, to support the sustainable functioning of the Centre in future, we are seeking to appoint this further part-time Director to cover finance and operations at the Centre. This post will be a fixed term appointment in the first instance. We are also in the process of moving Heads of Year/Course from casual to permanent contracts to facilitate greater delegation by the Senior management Team.
The Deputy Directors will need to work together closely and will be required to work as a team dividing duties flexibly to support and cover each other and the Director as necessary.

Main purpose of role
Work with the Director and the other Deputy Directors to provide leadership for the Minster Centre and specifically for the development and delivery of the finance and operations functions (including HR and IT) and the development of new income streams.
Main areas of responsibility
- Oversee effective delivery, management and development of the Finance function;
- Oversee effective delivery, management and development of HR.
- Oversee effective delivery and management of IT Services.
- Oversee effective delivery, management and development of premises and building operations.
- Line manage the Finance Manager, Operations Manager, IT Manager and support them to manage and develop their teams.
- Support the delivery and development of the Centre’s financial management. A particular focus will be the strengthening of debtor management and credit control relating to student fees. Strengthen links between the training office and financial functions.
- Produce a Financial Policy and Procedures Handbook for the organisation.
- Oversee the preparation of the Annual Report and Accounts and the Audit process.
- Develop business costing and budget management systems to support the development of the Centre.
- Lead on financial reporting to key partners, particularly Middlesex University and the Office for Students.This will include keeping abreast of HR policy developments and the implications for the Minster Centre, identifying opportunities, building collaborative relationships with key contacts, preparing and overseeing preparation of reports and reviews.
- Support the Director, SMT and Operations staff in using and managing the building to support training and therapy services and income generation. Oversee a potential relocation to new premises.
- Give oversight and support to the Operations Manager particularly on developing and reviewing HR policies and procedures (with the support of HR Consultancy when needed).
- Produce a revised and expanded Staff Handbook for the organisation.
- Give oversight and support to the IT Manager particularly on managing IT security and capability.
- Oversee and participate in staff recruitment as necessary.
- Undertake shorter-term development projects (working alone or in teams with other staff) as agreed with the Director and Training Committee.
- Deputise for the Director as required. Co-operate with the other Deputy Directors to support each other’s work, cover each other as necessary, and exchange ideas and approaches.

- Demonstrable ability to support the financial management and business development of a small organisation, including the capacity to identify new opportunities and support the development of new services and income streams.
- Previous experience of a leadership and management role at a senior level, with evidence of the ability to adjust style and approach to maximise team and individual performance and foster good working relationships across diverse groups.Proven ability to provide leadership and motivation to others to meet organisational objectives and achieve high standards.
- Evidence of capacity for creative problem solving.
- Demonstrable influencing, networking and collaborative working skills and the ability to win support from key external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to recognise trends, changes in circumstances and stakeholder requirements promptly and adjust standards and services accordingly.

- Proven ability to communicate effectively in meetings, presentations, and committees and across a wide range of media including financial reports, formal written reports, internal communications, and publicity materials.Experience of chairing meetings.

- Substantial relevant experience that demonstrates high levels of literacy, numeracy, accuracy, and analytical skills.
- Professional qualifications in accountancy or HR. Preferably a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (or equivalent).
- Previous experience of working in a charity or higher education setting. Knowledge and understanding of the governance issues and context within which UK charities operate.
- Knowledge and understanding of the issues and context within which psychotherapy, counselling and mental health professional training operates.
