A unique and career defining opportunity to grow and further enhance your leadership skills, whilst applying your practical business acumen and financial expertise, working alongside, and learning from a rich array of talented professionals.

About the CMA

The CMA has an exciting and challenging agenda – to contribute to faster economic growth, deliver positive competition outcomes and make markets work well for consumers, businesses, and the economy.

The Remedies, Business and Financial Analysis (RBFA) professional group plays a central role in the work of the CMA. RBFA is responsible for developing remedies to tackle competition and consumer problems and contributing business and financial analysis to assist case assessments. The work is wide ranging, intellectually stimulating and makes a real positive difference to the UK.

The role

As an RBFA Director, you might find yourself leading teams developing major market interventions (such as Open Banking), analysing profitability in markets as diverse as pharmaceuticals or funerals or reviewing regulatory decisions by economic regulators in sectors such as energy or water. Your responsibility will extend to helping inform the CMA’s understanding of how business and markets are functioning, overseeing high quality commercial and financial analysis, and shaping decisions as to whether there is a competition or consumer concern. For instance, you will work on merger control, offering commercial insights to the evaluation of issues such as whether the target company is a 'failing firm' and design and oversee divestiture remedies to preserve a competitive market structure.

Managing and developing the talents of your team is a key part to the role. In turn you will also have the opportunity to learn from leaders around you, with a diverse range of professional backgrounds and experience from both public and commercial sectors.

Why our Directors choose to be at the CMA

“The CMA gave me the opportunity to take part in an external talent programme, the Whitehall & Industry Group 'Step Up, Step Across' programme. This gave me a great opportunity to learn about leadership in a tailored way that took account of my own career path, work aims, aspirations and interests.  The programme also gave me the confidence to apply for a more senior leadership role and I am now using what I learned during the programme in my new role as a Director of Economics.”

Borbála Szathmáry - Director of Economics

“I can't think of a better place for someone who wants to work on challenging and diverse competition cases for the public good.”

Lucilia Falsarella Pereira – Director of Cartel and Antitrust Enforcement

What we are looking for

To be successful in your application you will need a postgraduate business, finance or accounting qualification (e.g. ACA, CIMA, CFA or MBA) or equivalent postgraduate experience, with familiarity with economics and financial theory and high levels of professional achievement.

Your experience will include effective and inclusive team leadership and developing high calibre and diverse talents. You will bring to the role a track record of leading, managing and delivering complex projects with defined resources and to tight timescales. You will also have a proven ability to provide thought leadership, combining commercial, analytical, and interpretive experience, supported by excellent communication and representation skills.

In return

The CMA is a hugely rewarding, diverse and stimulating place to work – an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so. All CMA staff enjoy generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous parental leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, and favourable consideration of flexible working.

The CMA are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. It is a priority to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we welcome applications from under-represented groups, including ethnically diverse people, people with a disability, and people with diverse gender identities.
