GSK is a world leading research-based pharmaceutical company that combines both individual talent and technical resources to create a platform for the delivery of strong growth in a rapidly changing healthcare market. Our mission is to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.

Biopharm Discovery is a department dedicated to the discovery of novel and effective biopharmaceutical medicines. This department comprises several complementary functions focused on the progression of a portfolio of biopharmaceuticals from initial antibody discovery, expression and characterisation to molecular engineering and biological and physiochemical profiling.

Within the Antibody Selections team we are looking to grow our Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) capability to deliver and enable the analysis of antibody repertoire sequence data from our in vivo and in vitro antibody discovery platforms. We are seeking a lab-based scientist with a background in biology, biochemistry, immunology or other related disciplines. You will work as part of a high performing team using the latest molecular biology techniques, laboratory automation, microfluidics and NGS equipment.  Working in a busy productive lab you will have opportunity to acquire new skills whilst being fully supported so that you can learn to analyse and understand the data that you produce. You will work in close collaboration with other teams in Biopharm Discovery and Computational Sciences. The data that you deliver will support therapeutic program team decisions across GSK's global R&D organisation and augment big data sets to support Machine Learning (ML) projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply molecular biology techniques for RNA/DNA extraction and NGS library preparation.
  • Operate NGS equipment, including Illumina and 10X Genomics technologies.
  • Contribute to the development of microfluidic techniques to establish and embed a high-throughput single cell sequencing process.
  • Perform B-cell enrichments using Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) methods.
  • Maintain lab notebooks, write lab reports, interpret and present data.
  • Work flexibly as part of a mutually supportive team to deliver on shared goals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BSc or equivalent in biological sciences with an interest in antibody/biologics drug discovery or immunology.
  • Experience of routine molecular biology methods; DNA/RNA purification and PCR.
  • Enthusiastic self-starter with a motivation to learn new techniques and ability to problem solve.
  • Good computing skills for data handling, interpretation and reporting (written & presentation)
  • Good attention to detail with high level of scientific rigor and integrity in experimental set up and lab notebook write up
  • Effective team player with excellent people and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated understanding of the antibody discovery process.
  • Scientific knowledge of antibody structure and function.
  • Ability to troubleshoot molecular biology, sequencing and data analysis issues.
  • Experience of flow cytometry.
  • Experience of NGS library preparation methods.

We can offer you a collaborative learning environment and the opportunity to develop your career and gain experience across drug discovery. If you share our priorities of innovation, performance and trust and are motivated to contribute towards bringing lifesaving drugs to patients, then we'd love to hear from you.

Please use your cover letter to highlight how you meet the competencies for the role, your cover letter along with your CV will be used to assess your application.
