Environmental Services Strategy Manager, Open to flexible working

Hackney Council is looking for a senior manager with a strong track record in environmental services to drive our strategies forward. You will be leading a high-profile service which includes delivery of priority services including recycling, as well as leading the development of environment related strategies. Your team will help create visitors’ first impressions of our borough, as well as being an important everyday support for residents and businesses. This role reports directly to the Head of Environmental Services.

As Environmental Services Strategy Manager you will be responsible not only for developing but also putting policy into action. Your remit will include street cleansing, waste management, recycling, pollution and other areas that impact local environmental quality. You will oversee the front-line delivery of these services alongside our education initiatives.

The successful candidate will need to have a high level of understanding of strategic waste management issues which should include a high level of knowledge on the circular economy and best in class issues around recycling. We need someone with a strong technical knowledge of managing major recycling and waste related projects. Your expertise will allow us to integrate services and implement new ways of working - maximising our impact while using resources in the most efficient ways.

To thrive in this role, you should be ambitious and passionate about the work. You will need to demonstrate how you would evolve our service, bringing an innovative approach grounded in a realistic understanding of the practicalities. You must have the vision to develop workable strategies that will lead to outstanding results.

This role needs someone with gravitas. Someone who can hold their own with our partners in the North London Waste Authority and GLA; and who is adept at influencing a range of other stakeholders. With senior level recycling and waste management experience, you will have a deep understanding of the frameworks within which we operate.

Your budget will be up to £8mill. You should have solid financial experience and a working knowledge of procurement and contract management. You will have four direct reports managing a wider team of around 20, ideally you will have a management qualification and be a member of the CIWM or other professional body.
