This role is responsible for setting standards and developing  effective strategies for Excise compliance within the Global Trade Facilitation Team.  It will also provide leadership and oversight on Global Excise issues in coordination with the Regional Global Trade teams.

This role is integral in ensuring Diageo has standardised, compliant and best-in-class people and processes to deliver the objectives and strategies of the Global Trade Facilitation team. It involves identifying opportunities for improvement and standardisation in the area of excise taxation, including ensuring controls and training programs are appropriate. The Excise SME will also play a key role in resolving critical Excise issues across the Globe.

The role will ensure

  • high standard of excise compliance (value protection)
  • excise tax or supply chain optimization (value creation). 

The role will:.

  • Provide strategic direction to Diageo's markets to facilitate effective and efficient excise compliance
  • Have a strong excise compliance background, with an ability to develop pragmatic and innovative solutions to complex problems
  • Be effective at building strong relationships with  internal stakeholders at all levels and across many functions to deliver their strategies
  • Work externally through Trade Bodies and Government Agencies, advocating for a Global Policy environment that facilitates efficient trade
  • Ensure the Global Trade Facilitation function  positively influences business outcomes for Diageo in-line with its commercial strategy
  • Provides Regional Customs & Excise and Global Trade Facilitation Team with strong technical leadership in all Excise matters
  • Be comfortable in exploring the use of evolving technology to better manage excise compliance processes, and take responsibility for the delivery of successful  global excise projects

Accountabilities

  • Own the Global Excise agenda and ensure buy-in from key stakeholders and regional global trade teams
  • Coordinate risks & opportunity management arising from business/operational changes to supply chains, product innovations and  excise legislative changes etc.
  • Determine & implement an effective global Excise strategy and liaise with key stakeholders, in raising awareness of Indirect tax accountabilities with Finance Directors & Regional Center of Excellence heads (Global Trade)
  • Provide technical expertise in the reporting of excise risks for financial reporting purposes
  • Provide Excise SME input to the business including support in negotiations between the business and Tax Authorities on significant Excise disputes
  • Implement training programs for other team members and stakeholders
  • Ensure standardised process and performance management are embedded by the Regional Teams, through rigorous performance management and verification
  • Own the agenda for external benchmarking to ensure Diageo operates best-in-class Excise management activities
  • Define and align the Excise Advocacy Agenda through engagement with Government Agencies and Corporate Relations

  • Governments / tax authorities – build and maintain relationships and dialogue with tax authorities and other governmental bodies where supporting regional issues or audits

  • Benchmark companies to test our standards against peer group organisations

Critical Capabilities:

  • Deep understanding of Excise regulations, processes and controls, specifically in the alcohol industry would be beneficial
  • Ability to interpret Excise legislation, identify key issues and communicate in a simple manner to the wider business 
  • Managing risk through internal controls
  • Establish & manage a regional programme of risk assurance in relation to excise duty compliance
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills that facilitate effective networking and relationship building
  • Willingness to explore the use of technology to improve the effectiveness or efficiency of process
  • Comfortable in managing data (quality, integrity etc.)
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and collaboratively in a dynamic environment over multiple locations
  • Ability to lead through influence
  • Be able to respond quickly to shifting business priorities

Qualifications & Experience :

  • Extensive Excise and global legislative experience
  • A track record in coaching and developing talent
  • Significant experience of leadership within a global trade or indirect tax function in a multinational company (likely at least 10 years across multiple geographic regions)
  • Ability to lead complex projects
  • Good communication and influencing skills
