Molecular Biologist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated molecular biologist with a passion for technology, to join the department of Protein and Cell Sciences at GSK’s Medicines Research Centre in Stevenage (PCS UK). The department is engaged in the design, generation and validation of biological reagents to support drug discovery across all of GSK’s therapeutic modalities.

You will be a self-motivated molecular biologist with an interest in applying advanced molecular biology techniques to solve protein expression challenges. You will be responsible for developing high-throughput cloning and screening strategies. The ideal candidate for this role will have skills in molecular biology and experience in mammalian expression systems. Experience carrying out automated methods for protein expression and purification would be desirable. The appointee will be capable of good experimental record-keeping and will have excellent written and oral communication skills. You will be expected to attend project meetings and contribute to project teams in a collaborative manner. An ability to work towards agreed timelines and effectively organise their work will be considered a key asset of the successful applicant.

Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • A background in a biological or molecular biology discipline.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology/DNA manipulation techniques associated with protein engineering, including, restriction enzyme cloning, PCR, DNA purification.
  • Experience with molecular biology design and construct generation.
  • Familiarity with DNA sequence alignment methods and required molecular biology software packages, e.g. SnapGene or Lasergene.
  • Experience with data-set handling software such as Excel.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Good record keeping skills
  • Track record of flexibility and team work.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the used of DNA software packages, particularly DNA contig alignments.
  • Advanced data analysis experience, e.g. Excel or Spotfire.
  • Familiarity with high-throughput molecular biology or DNA manipulating methods, such as Ligation-independent cloning, Golden-Gate cloning, combinatorial library assembly.
