Business Support and Administration Apprentice, Full or Part time

Hours: 35 per week or 28 per week options available

Our Business Support and Administration Pathway consists of an 18 month opportunity to build on your organisational, IT and communication skills and apply your ‘can-do’ attitude whilst working towards a Business Support and Administration apprenticeship qualification.  

Following the initial application process, the successful applicant will join the Islington Council’s ‘Employment, Skills and Culture’ service working on a new project to help Islington’s children and young people have the best start in life.  This project is called the ‘Islington Pledge’ and aims to:

  • Improve the number of arts and cultural experiences for Islington school pupils
  • Support more businesses to work with schools to improve skills development and careers education.

The Job - Working as a Business Support and Administration Apprentice for the Council you will:

  • Support teams with promoting and organising arts enrichment and careers development activities for children and young people attending schools, colleges and other education settings;
  • Be part of busy team working on a project that makes a difference to the lives of Islington children and young people;
  • Learn to respond professionally to telephone calls, e-mails and correspondence, dealing personally with straightforward requests for information and seeking advice from colleagues in order to resolve more complex enquiries;
  • Support the upkeep of computer databases and systems, including data recording and data entry;
  • Help to organise meetings including booking rooms, issuing invitations, printing materials, organising catering and taking minutes;
  • Help to build and maintain relationships with a range of organisations, including individuals working in other Council teams, Islington schools, arts and culture organisations, and businesses;
  • Take part in meetings, shadowing opportunities and other events;
  • Produce work with strong attention to detail;
  • Use initiative when faced with problems or challenges;
  • Provide support for communications and marketing initiatives, researching and preparing appropriate project material for newsletters, Islington Council publications, press releases, internet pages, and online departmental platforms;
  • Undertake other duties compatible with your learning and development as required.

Training and Development – Within your role you will:

  • Complete a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship qualification funded by the Council. This will involve attendance at a college and/or completing tasks in the workplace.
  • Join the Apprenticeship Pathway personal and professional development programme that will involve a series of varied development activities and events throughout your 18 months with the Council.

Moving on

After you have successfully completed your Apprenticeship Pathway you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained a professional qualification which will improve your chances of finding work either within the Council or with another employer or help you move on to a higher level apprenticeship elsewhere. You will have networked across the Council and be aware of the internal job market during your time with us and we will provide support on your approach to the wider job market as part of your development programme.

The Business Support and Administration Pathway is ideal for people with excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to multi-task and the motivation to learn new skills, contribute ideas and support their team.

To apply for this pathway, you must:

  • aged 16 or above and
  • unemployed (or working no more than 16 hours)
  • and an Islington resident or Islington care leaver or a student at an Islington secondary school student currently or within the last 12 months. 
  • Not currently be qualified in Business Administration or hold an administration related qualification at Level 3 or above.
