About the role:

At the Coal Authority the Environment Department is responsible for addressing the issues of water pollution from abandoned coal and metal mines across Britain by developing new schemes and supporting the operation of over 75 existing mine water treatment schemes.  There are three main delivery programmes covering sites spread across the former coal and metal mining areas in England, Wales and Scotland.

We are recruiting to fill a number of roles that sit within these programme delivery teams. Each role is responsible for day to day delivery of projects which can include the delivery of complex new water treatment schemes and refurbishments of our existing schemes.

You’ll be:

  • Joining the Projects team and helping to manage a portfolio of varied projects to remediate contaminated water from both coal & historic metal mines through the development of new schemes as well as the refurbish existing assets.
  • Typically leading and managing a number of projects, being responsible for delivering to agreed budgets and milestones.
  • Working closely with our technical, operations, innovations & R&D teams to find the best solutions and maximise commercial opportunities for each scheme.
  • Preparing project investment papers to obtain funding.
  • Managing stakeholders and statutory bodies to obtain consents & permissions.
  • Developing and coaching assistant project manager roles.

About you:

You’ll have

  • Experience of project management
  • A relevant qualification (or working towards) for your area of expertise or able to demonstrate relevant suitable experience
  • Proven record of delivering programmes or complex projects from conception to construction by identifying and mitigating constraints to development
  • Experience of managing consultants and contractors through the NEC suite of contracts.
  • An ability to manage and prioritise a high-volume workload & multiple projects
  • Excellent budget, programme & risk management skills
  • Highly developed communication, interpersonal skills and self-motivation
  • An open mind to find innovative solutions
  • Commercial acumen & client management skills
  • Self-motivation and excellent time management
  • The ability to work with other teams to deliver projects
  • Liaison, negotiation and public presentation skills
  • Report writing skills

We are interested in hearing from people with:

  • Experience in the water sector
  • Experience of identifying and developing solutions for sometimes constrained  and complex water remediation projects
  • Experience of developing new build projects from conception through to tender stage
  • Experience of developing and delivering refurbishment of existing assets

Please note there is now a new immigration system which will apply to people arriving in the UK from 1 January 2021, and EU citizens moving to the UK to work after this date will need to get a visa in advance.

EU citizens applying for a skilled worker visa must now show they have a job offer from an approved employer sponsor to be able to apply.  Currently, the Coal Authority is not an approved employer sponsor, so we will be unable to employ any new EU citizens wishing to work in the UK after 1 January 2021.

EU citizens who were already living and working in the UK before 1 January 2021 may continue to do so, providing they meet all the requirements and they apply to the EU Settlement Scheme before 30 June 2021.  This will mean that they can continue to live the UK after 30 June 2021.  If you are an EU citizen who has lived in the UK for many years or you have a permanent residence document, you still need to apply.
