Financial Manager, 20 hours/wk

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities:

Our client is looking for a financial manager to take over from their Assistant Accountant who is retiring at the end of October. The role is around 20 hours per week, and they can be flexible about working hours for the right candidate. Ideally they would like there to be some handover before the Assistant Bursar departs.

Our client, a Convent, is a registered charity. It remains home to the Sisters of the Community, but they are also in the middle of a major programme of renewal which involves converting a number of buildings on the site and parts of the Convent building itself so that they can be used for other purposes related to the charity’s objects.

Financial management, including the preparation of management accounts, is currently handled by our bursary team. Our Bursar left last year and was replaced by a Steward (general manager). There is also an Assistant Accountant and a Bursary Clerk. The Assistant Accountant is retiring at the end of October. Our existing Bursary Clerk does an excellent job processing transactions and maintaining the basic records.

We are looking for is someone who can not only prepare management accounts (and a draft of the annual accounts) but also provide insights and commentary on the financial position and related matters.

To provide some idea of scale, here are some key figures:

  • Annual income is about £750,000
  • There is an investment portfolio worth approximately £22m.
  • The planned refurbishment of part of the Convent, which will start later this year, will cost between £4m and £5m.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing guidance to the bursary clerk so that the day-to-day bookkeeping is kept on track
  • Reviewing the monthly payroll
  • Preparing management accounts (either monthly or quarterly – to be agreed)
  • Commenting on the financial position shown by the management accounts and drawing to the attention of the Steward (general manager) and/or Chair of Trustees matters of significance
  • Preparing quarterly VAT returns (addressing issues such as the split between business and non-business activities)
  • Preparing draft annual accounts and supporting information, and liaising with the charity’s auditors
  • Generally acting as a financial and business sounding board for the senior staff at the Convent (i.e. the Steward (general manager) and the Estates Manager)
