(Senior) Director, Clinical Development, Global Health, Open to flexibility


The main focus of this role will be to provide medical support and governance for the GSK portfolio of anti-infective therapies for Global Health that are currently in development. This will involve the development of close working relationships with colleagues within the Global Health unit, safety group, clinical operations, and regulatory.

This role will also require close interaction with the chemists and biologists in the Discovery Units in Global Health, to provide clinical insight and to develop and execute a translational strategy around a disease and/or drug compound. This includes the development of novel tools and methodologies (including biomarkers)

The position holder will be expected to input to and assist with the development, implementation and conduct of clinical programmes, and will take on the medical monitor role for assigned programmes and may assume the relevant responsibility for medical, legal and human safety aspects of assigned clinical programmes (general medical governance).

Additional responsibilities:

Additional responsibility as the Clinical Investigation Leader (CIL) may be appropriate for specific studies. If appropriate, the candidate may be considered for Project Physician Leadership (PPL) and/or Early Development Leader (EDL) roles

Why You?

Basic qualifications:

  • GMC registered physician
  • Specialist qualification in Infectious Diseases
  • Good appreciation of the drug development process for adult and paediatric indications
  • Knowledge of clinical trial conduct (adults and/or paediatrics)
  • Medical monitor experience
  • Ability to interpret clinical trial results, including the strengths and weaknesses of study design and application of study results to clinical practice
  • Ability to operate effectively across functions and geographic interfaces
  • Ability to influence and lead in a matrix organisation
  • Able to operate in a complex organisational environment
  • Comfortable with being personally accountable and capable of arguing own case.
  • Strong oral & written communications skills
  • Comfortable engaging and communicating with external Opinion Leaders
  • Visible and accountable and with an open style of interaction

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience of conducting trials in low resource settings
  • Experience of design and conduct of First Time in Human Studies
  • Experience of writing grant applications
  • A record of publications (peer review and abstracts)
  • Knowledge of regulatory systems outside of the FDA and EMA
  • Track record of managing collaborations with external stakeholders
