To proactively drive the UK corporate tax agenda to ensure the effective management of Diageo’s UK tax affairs including management of the HMRC relationship. Lead key strategic tax projects and support the UK business strategy and operational activity to generate value, mitigate risk, and improve ways of working across functions   

Accountabilities

  • Lead key projects and provide specialist UK tax support on business projects 
  • Build and maintain an open and clear working relationship with HMRC’s Customer Compliance Manager and the Corporate Tax specialist 
  • Take the lead on HMRC corporate tax enquiries including the management of tax disputes 
  • Contribute to the overall strategy for UK corporation tax matters and ensure our approach to the country's tax compliance and reporting is aligned 
  • Be responsible for the corporation tax return process, provide specialist tax input on material issues and review judgements made during the preparation process 
  • Lead tax interaction with the UK businesses to influence and give direction to applicable business partners, including stakeholders 
  • Liaise with UK finance business partners to identify key tax risks, maintain a tax risk register and chair quarterly tax risk meetings 
  • Provide mentorship and training to develop UK tax knowledge to members of Global Tax involved in the compliance and reporting process
  • Keep up to date with UK tax law changes and HMRC practice; identify tax risks and opportunities and recommend actions 

Key interactions – internal: 

  • Global Tax – collaborate with other teams responsible for UK tax reporting and UK tax compliance results, and global tax strategies, policies, standards and guidelines  
  • UK business leaders – develop and maintain a strong working relationship, keep up to date with business priorities and developments to identify tax risks and opportunities 
  • Specialist finance and global functions - collaborate with these functions as required to deliver end to end tax services 
  • Global Diageo Business Support teams - support the delivery of high quality, timely tax activities and outcomes to the business 

Key interactions – external: 

  • HMRC 
  • External advisors – support the relationship with external tax advisors and hold them to account for the delivery of timely, efficient and value tax advice 
  • Industry forums such as CBI – contribute on specialist areas relevant to Diageo and share knowledge and intelligence with other large corporates 

Qualities and Experience required

  • 8+ years UK corporate tax experience 
  • Accounting or Tax qualifications 
  • Strong UK tax technical knowledge and international tax experience 
  • Experience of dealing with HMRC 
  • Excellent interpersonal, business partnering and influencing skills 
  • Commercially astute; analytically strong strategic problem solver with a global perspective 
  • Imaginative and solution oriented 
  • Able to balance a diverse and sophisticated agenda 
  • Energy and strive to cut through and reach solutions
