Senior Policy Adviser x5 - Returners
Do you want to work in the heart of government on some of the most important and exciting issues facing the UK? Are you looking to return to work after being out of work for 2 years or in work that doesn’t fully utilise your skills, experience and competencies?
We are looking for Senior Policy Advisers with excellent political understanding and project management or economics experience to join the Strategy, Planning and Budget (SPB) team based in the centre of the Treasury. If you are experienced in working in a high-level policy environment or a challenging role that uses similar skills (such as consulting, project management, strategy, economics or finance), then this role could be the perfect return to the workplace for you.
The Treasury is the United Kingdom’s economics and finance ministry. It is responsible for formulating and implementing the government’s financial and economic policy. Its aim is to raise the rate of sustainable growth, and achieve rising prosperity and a better quality of life with economic and employment opportunities for all.
Working within SPB is a great opportunity to apply your analytical and strategic thinking skills to present complex arguments clearly and persuasively, and using them to inform and implement strong solutions to policy issues. The role involves leading on projects that will shape a specific area of policy/strategy, developing and maintaining relationships with senior officials in order to achieve HMT and Government objectives, and demonstrating strong leadership as an excellent line manager to ensure successful delivery of objectives.
Ideally, the candidate will have a strong interest in public policy making and the ability to see the big picture regarding the challenges and opportunities facing Government. You’ll be able to make effective decisions and have confidence leading and communicating at all levels. In addition, you’ll be able deliver at pace to meet deadlines while working independently and managing a busy workload.

Returner placements will be open to all individuals who have taken time out of work for at least 2 years, or are currently engaged in work that does not make the best use of their skills, competencies and qualifications.
Please explain clearly within your application how you feel you meet these criteria.
Individuals appointed to the Treasury will be subject to National Security Vetting. To allow for meaningful checks to be carried out applicants will normally need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 years out of the past 5 years. A lack of UK residency in itself is not necessarily a bar to security clearance but the Department will need to consider on a case by case basis using all information that can be obtained following a successful application.
Our recruitment process is underpinned by the principle of appointment based on fair and open competition and appointment on merit, as outlined in the Civil Service Commissioners’ Recruitment Principles. If you feel your application has not been treated in accordance with these principles and you wish to make a complaint, you should in the first instance contact HMT by email: firstname.lastname@example.org
If you are not satisfied with the response you receive, you can contact the Civil Service Commission, which regulates all Civil Service recruitment.
