Biotransformation Scientific Leader, Open to flexibility

GSK is a science-led global healthcare company with R&D playing a fundamental role in helping GSK to achieve its mission - enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer. The Analytical Sciences and Development (ASD) department, part of Platform Technology & Sciences (PTS), undertakes critical expert work in supporting the drug development process as well as existing products, to deliver new medicines to patients by accelerating access to novel medicines, preventions and cures.

The Global Spectroscopy (GS) group, part of ASD, is responsible for all the spectroscopic activities that take a drug candidate from earliest development into manufacturing. As part of this, the spectroscopy group solves structural chemistry problems for biologists, chemists and analysts by making intelligent and coordinated use of MS, NMR, vibrational spectroscopy and allied hyphenated techniques. The group uses state-of-the-art equipment in a modern laboratory and works closely with scientists around the world in GSK.

We currently have a vacancy for a biotransformation expert who is looking for an opportunity to lead a team of spectroscopists in delivering biotransformation information to drug discovery and development programs. In this exciting role, you will have responsibility and accountability for the delivery of high quality metabolism data for molecules across the GSK portfolio, allowing key decisions to be made relating to human safety.

The principle duties of the role are to:

  • Coordinate, plan, design, execute and report bespoke biotransformation studies to further the course of Discovery and Development projects and programs by enabling key decisions to be made impacting human safety
  • Integrate MS and NMR data in collaboration with NMR experts
  • Contextualise and extrapolate drug metabolism findings and discuss data with program/project team members
  • Develop a deep understanding of all areas of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics through integration with Project Experts
  • Explore and implement innovative mass spectrometry methodology and procedures
  • Supervise, train, develop and motivate team members
  • Act as mentor, coach and consultant in metabolite identification
  • Comply with the requirements of Quality, Safety and GSK policies and procedures and ensure that GSK intellectual property is protected
