Making a difference through social and employer research
As a not-for-profit, the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) has been cultivating independent, evidence-based research that matters for fifty years. Our goal is to make the UK a better place to live, work and learn.
From helping major employers to stop the gender pay gap in its tracks, to supporting health and wellbeing initiatives for government bodies, employers and charities like Mind or Cancer Research UK. As a researcher, every day is different, and we’ll support you to develop your own area of interest to explore.
IES HR researchers come from a variety of backgrounds, from human resources and academia, to the civil service and vocational roles. What they all have in common is a genuine interest in people, and the changing world of HR, and the ability to support employers to build and sustain the engagement, productivity and wellbeing of their workforce.
The ideal candidate would have:
- a higher degree in an HR /social science /business/occupational psychology discipline with significant understanding of employment/HR labour market issues
AND / OR
- a background in HR, with a good understanding of current issues facing human resources teams and directors, and experience of developing evidence-based processes and practices
Whatever your background, you’ll also have:
- A good understanding of practical research methods, and experience of using a range of qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies to answer research questions.
- Clear, accurate and compelling written and verbal communication.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan and prioritise your own work.
If you’re applying for the senior role, you will need to be able to demonstrate your:
- Ability to engage with a wide range of senior practitioners in the world of HR and become recognised as an expert in their field.
- Excellent analytical skills, intellectual curiosity and creativity.
- Experience of managing projects, people, clients and budgets.
- Confidence, and ability to work in a changeable, fast paced environment.
