Vice President, Business Development Pipeline, Open to flexible working
The WWBD team acts as an external facing group within Pharma R&D enabling GSK to maintain connectivity to the venture capital, biotech, academia and pharma sectors. The WWBD team supports R&D and works hand in hand with the R&D Units to help identify opportunities, enabling GSK to access new areas of science, innovative medicines and platform technologies that enhance our discovery, research and development capabilities. Key activities undertaken by the group are: identifying/sourcing opportunities, leading technical due diligence, structuring and negotiating deals, managing the process of governance review and post signature alliance management.
In response to a recent transformation of GSK R&D and the launch of a new R&D approach, WWBD has created two Business Development Pipeline teams which are focused on BD opportunities outside of Oncology. We are looking for a VP Business Development Pipeline for each team.
The VP Business Development Pipeline will lead a team that is responsible for identifying and delivering new collaboration, licensing and acquisition opportunities for therapeutic assets in discovery through late-stage clinical development. This is a highly impactful role and one that will help shape the pipeline and future growth of the organisation.
In this role you will act as a dedicated point of contact for the SVP of Research and SVP of Development and will work closely with them and their leadership teams to determine portfolio and BD priorities and explore ways to best to leverage BD to strengthen and optimize the R&D pipeline.
Alongside these internal relationships you will also leverage and deepen networks within Academia, Biotech, Pharma, as well as the venture capital and investor community to enhance our ability to identify new opportunities and reputation as a partner of choice.
Build and execute the BD strategy for the R&D pipeline.
Identify, assess and lead BD opportunities for access to therapeutic assets in discovery to late-stage clinical development, including opportunity sourcing and evaluation, due diligence, business case development, and negotiation of transactions.
Lead a best-in-class team of BD professionals, with responsibility for talent recruitment, training, development, performance management, and employee engagement.
Develop a robust pipeline of potential external assets that fit with the new R&D approach.
Develop expert understanding of the competitive and opportunity landscape.
Represent WWBD to potential external academic, biotech, and pharma partners as well as venture capital and other investment firms.
Member of the WWBD Leadership Team and support the performance, development and engagement of other teams in the department as well as the department as a whole.
Technical Skills & Experience
PhD, MD or equivalent education or substantial experience in pharmaceutical R&D is highly desired. A background in Immunology, Genetics or Drug Discovery and Development is preferred.
Significant BD experience, including leading opportunity assessments for therapeutic assets and a track record of successfully delivering partnering transactions.
Proven direct line leadership experience and experience in building, leading and developing teams.
Experience in managing multiple stakeholders across an R&D organisation and working closely with R&D leadership to define strategic priorities.

- Bachelors / Undergraduate Degree
- Graduate/advanced degree in business or life sciences (PhD, MD) is preferred. Substantial experience in pharmaceutical R&D or background in Immunology or Genetics is highly desired.
